<image:caption>Our missionary symbol is the anchor, symbolizing both our anchor in Christ and the boats that used to take us on that long journey across the sea. This is a photo of me with my sweet nephew the day I left home to start my missionary journey. Suitcase in hand, about to go through airport security and get on a plane. Times have changed indeed.</image:caption>

She’s my boss you know.” And when her dad dropped by to see us at breakfast, someone said, “It looks like your dad is here, Katie.” So I guess I could say I have a beautiful mother (even though I’m pretty sure my mom is younger than me :-).</image:caption>

I’ve found it’s quite a thrill for them if I take their picture. We took a series of them, but this one looks about like the view I saw every time I looked behind me. A clump of children whispering and giggling.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The District Superintendent in Kono hosted us for breakfast every morning. A lot of the DS’s job is hospitality for visiting guests. This is one way the Sierra Leone (and I suspect all of Africa) is distinct. It’s taught me a lot about Biblical hospitality to see how it works in such a communal, relationship-driven culture. In this way, the DS’s wife is a big part of the ministry too. (I think the female DS’s end up doing all the work.) I’ve been fed well and welcomed so kindly both times coming to Kono. These are the DS’s dogs…named “Believe in God” and “It is Well”.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The last day during our afternoon lull, I walked the surrounding neighborhood. I think I made friends with every person. Some called me over to show me how their child was hysterically afraid of me. Others asked for my friendship. One woman walked straight up to me about six inches from my face and said, “I’m Alice. What’s your name?” Others called after me from across the street. It was great fun. These kids wanted a picture. And their hands were dyed red, they told me, from a local fruit. They tried to wipe some off onto my skin before I left them. And then they giggled and giggled.</image:caption>

<image:caption>About two hours in, after we picked up a another student of mine in Makeni, the truck started giving us trouble. My driver recognized it immediately as a fuel issue. But we’d just had the fuel filter and all that entailed looked at. We’d obviously gotten a bad batch of gas somewhere. Navo was worried we weren’t going to make it to Kono. I suggested we bleed the fuel filter and as it turns out, I knew how to do it. Whaaaaat?! I know! The missionary who sold me the truck showed me how to do it because it’s not that uncommon to get some fuel with water in it around here. So here they are bleeding the filter. We would do it three or four more times before returning to Freetown and still the truck was giving us trouble. We even went to the mechanic in Koidu, who told us we needed an oil change. That did a whole lot of no good for the fuel situation. I gotta say I am very grateful to have a driver.</image:caption>

<image:caption>When we arrived after a night in Koidu hosted by the District Superintendent, I was led to meet the baby and her mother and aunt. It was a special moment. To see the look on mother’s face when I met them was, again, so humbling. Then we went to the worship service, let by a lay evangelist and many lay leaders.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The congregation started thin but filled up as time went by. In Kono, they speak both Kono and Krio. And some speak English. I communicated some with Tamba’s family in Krio.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - Katherine Meek Kaingbanja</image:title>
<image:caption>Did I mention that Tamba also asked me to preach the service that Sunday? No?! I’ve learned that even people who speak English don’t understand my accent. So it’s best to get some translation. The gentleman here is a local teacher. He was told right before I preached that he would be doing the translating. He did well. But I’ll be honest. Cross-cultural preaching with a translator is challenging for the preacher, the translator, AND the congregation alike. My sermon was about how, as important as our names are, there is one name more true than the rest. It is the name given to us by God: Beloved. Kwadia in Kono. I pray the Holy Spirit worked to communicate that beyond our stifling efforts.</image:caption>

<image:caption>After the ceremony, Tamba asked me to drive the family back to his village about 6 miles away. It was on a bad road but only 6 miles. And Tamba promised it was only 30 minutes round trip. They were going to leave me there to take the trip but I said I wanted to go. Of course I didn’t know that that meant a visit to the local chiefs. Anytime a “stranger” comes to town you’re expected to visit the chiefs along with a gift to give. I found out later that I did that wrong too. We also visited the school where Tamba is head teacher. During Ebola, people scattered and fled into the bush. While they were gone the school caught on fire. They’re still meeting there among the singed walls and equipment. That 30 minute round trip turned into 2 and a half hours. It was a late night getting home to Freetown.</image:caption>

<image:caption>This woman came over when we arrived at the house to find out the baby’s name. We told her the name and she said, “I don’t know her name.” And we told her again and again she said, “I still don’t know her name.” Finally my student Roy leaned over and said, “She wants you to give the baby a donation.” So I smiled and brought over my 5000 Le to give to her mother. And then the woman started singing and dancing in celebration of little girl Katherine. She came back later with the biggest pineapple I’d ever seen. I asked for a picture with her and she looked at me like I was crazy. Navo, Roy, and I stopped to eat while we were there. It was food that had been prepared special for us. I wasn’t sure what I was eating…some kind of mystery meat. Actually mystery organ. It wasn’t exactly meat. But it was delicious. Later in the car, the boys were talking about in Krio. Then Navo looked over at me and said, “Do you guys eat pig in the US?” I said yes and he seemed relieved if not a little amused. A little later I asked which part of the pig exactly I had eaten. They told me it was the liver. It was good. And I would eat it again.</image:caption>

<image:caption>These mattresses were rented for the adults who stayed with the children all weekend. We (and by we I mean my driver) drive these across town twice. To pick them up it took four hours round trip to go what was probably something like 15 miles. Traffic and bumpy roads slow things down around here quite a bit. I won't tell you how these were tied down before I insisted that we buy another rope.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Monday-Wednesday, the students had a spiritual formation retreat. We were able to hear Rev. Dr. Joseph Moiba's lecture on embracing the body (as opposed to asceticism) and grace as the primary saving power of God. I did not stop nodding my head the whole time. Very impressive.</image:caption>

<image:caption>On Saturday, Olivia took me to Beach Number Two about thirty minutes outside of town. They say that the beaches in Sierra Leone are are some of the best in the world. I'm not much of a beach girl but when I turned around after getting in the ocean to see the view behind me, it was so beautiful that I gasped audibly.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Olivia and me in our new hats. They quoted me the white person price of 55,000 Le (about $7). That seemed like a great price to me! Olivia told me that they quoted her 30,000 Le (less than $4) and she thought it was way too high. I bargained them down to 55,000 for the two. Half price...not too bad.</image:caption>

I forgot that they sing the Lord's Prayer, so I started in on it and then was stopped abruptly with the sound of the organ. The clerical collar is a must here.</image:caption>

<image:caption>This is how Charles Davies Memorial does a church meal. I was placed under a canopy with the more mature attendees. Still I sweated through all my clothes. We ate black eyed peas in a kind of stew, sweet potato (that's white in color), fried bread of some kind, plantains, goat, rice, and something reminiscent of the masa in Mexican tamales.</image:caption>

The buckets are so big because $100 is 760,000 leones that come in denominations of 5000 and 10000. That's a lot of bills! Every person was invited forward for the offering by row (like we do communion in the states) by the stewardship representatives who are in uniform.
